A lovely pair of handcrafted shell earrings set in metal have a charm and appeal of their own. Conch shell craft is created by the Shankhari or Sankhakars, craftsmen who belong to the ancient 'Nabasakha', one of the nine renowned craftsmen communities of West Bengal. Traditionally, a sharp-edged semi-circular saw called 'Sankher Karat' has been used to cut and shape the hard conch shell though electric saws are increasingly coming into use.
