Embossed Leather Craft

Beautiful Embossed Leather craft practiced by artisans from West Bengal has a unique character of its own. The craft was initiated to the village cluster through Kala Bhavan, the Department of Fine Arts section at the Viswabharati University. It was Rabindranath Tagore who had invited Batik artists from Java, Indonesia, to introduce the technique in India. In its initial phase Leather Embossing was restricted only to Batik on leather. However, over time, the craftsmen of the cluster have diversified into embossing designs on leather and then doing Batik on it. The process of embossing entails softening the leather, embossing the designs through dies, and finally dyeing the product.
