Andhra Leather Craft Lamp Shade - Neelam

SSLP01I

Andhra Leather Craft Lamp Shade - Neelam. Crafted in a refined, tapering silhouette rendered in deep indigo and ivory with scrolling floral patterns, the aesthetically deliberate repetitions of this leather lamp shade are a testament to centuries-old storytelling traditions. This Andhra leather lamp shade draws from the translucent artistry of Tholu Bommalata—the shadow-puppet tradition of Andhra Pradesh. Once used to animate epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the craft lives on through chiselled perforations and hand-painted vegetable dyes that allow light to pass gently through narrative pattern. Made from treated goat hide or sheepskin, each piece is sun-dried, detailed using the traditional pogaru, and finished by experienced artisans whose practice balances patience with precision. When illuminated, it casts a soft, honeyed glow that echoes the magic of shadow theatre; unlit, it stands as a striking graphic object defined by floral pot motifs and rhythmic paisleys. No two pieces are ever identical—subtle variations in line and tone honour the hand behind the form. (Electrical fittings not included.)

Andhra Leather Craft

This translucent leather painting art form from Andhra Pradesh is used to make puppets for the popular shadow-puppet theatre tradition of Andhra Pradesh -‘Tholu Bommalata’- literally meaning “the dance of leather dolls’. An ancient practice, wandering entertainers have for centuries disseminated the knowledge of Hindu epics and local folk tales to the remotest corners of the region, through this art form and tradition. The raw materials used are Goat hide and sheepskin and the colours used are derived from vegetables dyes. Creating small holes inside the decorative patterns enhances the attraction of the items, which is done using a pogaru (chisel). The painted piece is dried in sunlight over two to three days. Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata inspire artisans to create these beautiful items in a wide range of shapes, sizes and utility varying from paintings to lamp shades or puppets as a vibrant and unique work of art to liven up a wall or a corner. Lampshades are created using a mould and most of them are based on mythological figures.
