Hailing from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, Pichwai painting is a ritual art form deeply embedded in the worship of Shrinathji, a child incarnation of Lord Krishna. Traditionally hung behind the idol as seasonal and ceremonial backdrops lent them their name which literally means ‘Hanging Behind.’ Hand-painted on starched cotton or handwoven cloth using natural pigments, true Pichwais often take weeks or months to complete.
