Channapatna Wood Craft

The origin of this Craft can be traced to the reign of Tipu Sultan who invited artisans from Persia to train the local artisans in the making of wooden toys and Craft. The Craft has diversified over time and in addition to the traditional ivory-wood, other woods including rubber, sycamore, cedar, pine and teak are now used as well. Manufacturing stages include procuring wood, seasoning and cutting it into desired shapes and then pruning and carving toys and other utility items. Colours are then applied onto these carved items after which they are finally polished. Vegetable Dyes are used in the colouring process.
