AUTHENTIC CRAFT. CREATED IN INDIA

Bagh Print Table Mats & Runner (Set of 7). Bagh Printing is an unique art form and a traditional hand block print technique practised in Bagh, Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh. Bagh print fabric is recognised with its replicated geometric and floral compositions as well as the imaginative use of natural colours using vegetable dyes predominantly in red and black over a white background, that impart a completely unique appeal to this popular fabric. Over time the colours used have been standardized using alum based red, corroded filings of iron for black; and vegetable based yellow and green dyes. Bagh printing is practised on a wide range of materials ranging from cotton, silk and chiffon to crepe, georgette and even bamboo chicks. The printing blocks are made of wood. Materials required for the process are raw salt, castor oil, alum, iron sulphate, jaggery, pomegranate, and leaves of indigo, lime and a few other trees along with tamarind seed powder, flowers for polishing and fixing, and alizarine (non-red dyes) to fix colours. In this printing technique the cloth is first subjected to a treatment of a blend of corroded iron fillings, alum and Alizarin and then patterned by skilled artisans. The printed fabric is then subjected to repeated washing in the flowing waters of the Bagh river after which it is dried in the sun for a specific period to obtain the fine lustre. Bagh Prints are considered exclusive due to their ‘generational legacy’. The Khatris innovated extensively on local techniques prevalent at the time and one such introduction was the old technique of re-using 300 year old traditional blocks which were basically patterns or designs of paintings in the 1500 year old cave paintings in the region. Some of the block designs covered Nariyal Zaal and Ghevar Zaa are based on the Taj Mahal paintings.
