Shawls have been worn and used as a warm protective garment by kings and queens since ancient times. However, the Mughal emperor Akbar experimented with various styles and encouraged weavers to try new motifs, which helped establish a successful shawl industry. Jammu & Kashmir specializes in the weaving of Raffal & Pashmina shawls. Pashmina shawls are made of a special wool, called the Pashmina that is extracted from the Kel goat. Pashmina is of course exclusive and the most sought-after wool known for its softness and warmth. The standard Wool woven in Kashmir is 'Raffel' and is 100% pure. There are a number of wool combinations using various types of wool that impact the overall softness and texture of the stole or the shawl. The shawls and stoles are available in a multitude of colours – woven in patterns, plain or embroidered. The Kashmir shawl can be categorized into two main types of fine weaving - the loom woven or Kani shawls and the needle embroidered or sozni shawls. ‘Kani’ is the Kashmiri name given to a wooden spool which works most while weaving a shawl on the loom.. The Kani Shawl refers to a particular type of shawl that is woven using numerous eyeless wooden spokes in the place of a shuttle. Kashmiri stoles and shawls are popular for their warmth, softness and appeal. The embroidery worked on some of them is a special to Kashmir. 'Sozni' or needlework is generally done in a panel along the sides of the shawl. Other unique types of needle embroidery include Papier Mache` work because of the design and the style in which it is executed and the 'Ari' or hook embroidery where floral motifs are finely worked in concentric rings of chain stitch....
