A solitary deer poised mid-stride reflects vitality, freedom, and the agrarian reverence for forest life central to Sohrai tradition. The artist has rendered this traditional art form on handmade paper, and the works are available in four thoughtfully curated sizes. Sohrai is a vibrant indigenous mural art from the Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand, traditionally practiced by women from tribal communities such as Kurmi, Santhal, Munda, and Oraon. It is intrinsically linked to the Sohrai harvest festival, celebrated after the paddy harvest and often coinciding with Diwali. In this ritual celebration of abundance, artists paint the walls of homes with motifs that honour the land, livestock, and natural life cycles that sustain agrarian communities. Within this broad tradition, the Jorakath style—associated with Kurmi artists in the Saal forest area—features earthy-toned compositions with confident black outlines and restrained, natural colours. Buffaloes, cows, deer, and birds are recurring subjects, rendered in flowing, instinctive forms using mineral and clay-based pigments applied with fingers, twigs, or simple handmade tools.
